Mary Ann Bailey-circa 1830
Mary Ann stitched her pastoral sampler at the age of ten in England. The girl holding a sheaf of wheat stands in a field of grass with some sheep, a dog and a wolf's head. The sheep are stitched using French knots. The remaining sampler is stitched full of lovely motifs such as flowers,
trees, birds and butterflies. A typical verse of the period deals with death and the promises of afterlife. A Honeysuckle border surrounds everything. Stitches used in this sampler are cross-stitch, French knots, cross over one and satin stitch.
