SV-1750 Sampler

SV-1750 SamplerNew! This sampler is new to our collection.

This charming sampler is of Dutch origin and most likely from the province of Zeeland. SV made a darning sampler a year later and it has the typical stair step pattern on it found on darning samplers from here.
The sampler is totally balanced and all the motifs surround a couple in a bower having a glass of what might be beer, the beverage of choice at the time. The checkerboard ground is found on numerous Dutch samplers. The peacock with individual tail feathers, the Dutch maid of freedom in her garden, the grape carriers, Joshua and Caleb, Adam and Eve, the oak trees and the Schooner can all be found on Dutch samplers. Many of these motifs were used on other objects, such as tiles and wooden cookie boards.
