MARY STOURT (1760)
A conventional border frames Mary's sampler of traditional horizontal pattern bands and alphabets. These are typical of the period. A decorative pictoral scene at the bottom consists of a small hill with shrubs, potted flowers, birds, a basket and a snail. Mary was 11 years old when she stitched her sampler and used cross stitch, satin, Algerian eye, tent and cross stitch over one thread. The original sampler is in the Fitzwilliam Museum.
