Aagie Jans-1732-1733
Aagie’s sampler is from the island of Marken in the Netherlands. It is typical of samplers made here in the way all the motifs are stitched using different colours in a srtipe pattern. Marken was a fishing community and it is no surprise to see a large ship on the sampler. It is situated in what used to be the Zuider sea. The horses with female riders on them are a common feature on Marken samplers as are the geometric motifs and the numerous bands. The pattern bands were used on
ribbons which women wore underneath their caps as well as on cuffs and colars. Most of the motifs and bands were worked on edges of sheets, pillow cases and on a type of bib worn by babies, but then almost always it was stitched using only one colour.. The chess board being held by a
couple along the bottom edge represent the game of life The two dates on the sampler are probably from the year the sampler was started and completed.
This sampler is from the collection of the Frances Lehman Art Center at Vassar College, access. no. 1997.7.150
The sampler is stitched in long armed cross, cross and double running stitches. Available Sring of 2007.
